DIY Scarlet Witch Costume: How to Make Avengers Costumes

My youngest has a strange fascination with Scarlet Witch; it’s mostly strange because this particular superhero doesn’t make an appearance in the only Marvel-related show she has watched, which is the cartoon “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”. Regardless, she was determined to be her for Halloween. Since she isn’t particular about the costume, other than that she likes the coat she wears in the second Avengers movie, it was easy to throw together what I could find at a thrift store or on hand. So here is my DIY Scarlet Witch costume:

This was my easiest costume to put together this year for Halloween. The key factor was my success at the thrift store. If you can find a red shirt and black pants, then you already have your base. The jacket can also be quite easy if you can find a long-sleeve red shirt that is a few sizes too big. I had originally used this particular red shirt the previous year for my son’s Harry the Hook costume.

To turn the shirt into the jacket, just cut straight down the middle of the front of the shirt. Then, fold down the “lapels” and stitch them so you have an opening in the jacket. Fold up and hem the sleeves to the desired length and you’re set. You could also use a red dress, if you’re able to find one.

Adding Accessories

If you have a picky kid, the accessories may be a bit tricky, but for my little one, they were a breeze. The Dollar Store is great for finding gloves, and since they’re only a dollar, it’s easy to cut them up without feeling guilty about it. I found some red, fuzzy gloves. Just have your kid try them on, and measure approximately where to cut the fingers. After all, Scarlet Witch does have fingerless gloves!

An important accessory not to be overlooked is the necklace. If you look through pictures of Wanda/Scarlet Witch, she is a big fan of that particular piece of jewelry. In the end, I just looked through my jewelry and found one that was simple and clear. You could definitely find something cheap at a Dollar Store, secondhand store, or if you have something already in your jewelry collection, all the better.

What About the Hair?

Good question! The picture I put at the beginning of this shows my daughter with braids in her hair. That was a personal choice. Remember, she isn’t all that familiar with what the Scarlet Witch looks like in detail. Fortunately, the character has a simple hair down approach to her hair, so no fancy styling required.

So that’s it! A simple costume that helps our Marvel family costumes look complete. If you’d like to see other DIY Avengers tutorials, check out my Hulk, Captain Marvel, or Black Panther posts.
