How to Make Dragon Prince Halloween Costumes

I love that my kids are all still on board for doing family costumes for Halloween. This year the consensus was that we needed to do characters from “Dragon Prince”. My youngest two haven’t even seen the show, but when my littlest found out she could be a dragon, the costumes were no longer negotiable. So it came to pass that “Dragon Prince” became our theme.

We like to keep it cheap around here, so we shopped at Value World for existing clothing pieces, and then I altered them into the costumes. For 6 people, I try to stick to a budget of around $100-$150 total.

Our Dragon Prince Characters:

Rayla the Moonshadow elf

Dragon Prince costumes, Rayla the moonshadow elf

Items to purchase (or already on hand): green tights, black t-shirt, green t-shirt.

Items to make: horns, belt, wristbands, vest, shirt. The belt buckle is felt and cardboard. The wristbands are felt. Horns are papier-mâché and a headband.

Claudia

Items to purchase (or already on hand): black tights, black boots, black long-sleeved shirt, black belt, wig, black dress

Items to make: skirt with front panel and shoulder feathers. These are all made from a single black dress found at Value World. Details are created with gold acrylic paint. Shoulder feathers are felt.

Lord Viren

Items to purchase (or already on hand): black tights, grey nightgown

Items to make: scarf, staff. The scarf is fleece. The staff is papier-mâché and acrylic paint.

Callum

Items to purchase (or already on hand): Grey pants, purple shirt, brown(ish) gloves, blue jacket.

Items to make: Scarf, journal, shirt, gloves. Buying a pair of Dollar Tree gloves makes it easy to cut the fingers without watching your money disappear. Acrylic paint makes detailing the shirt a breeze. The scarf is fleece with felt details added. The journal is made completely from papier-mâché and acrylic paint.

Prince Ezran

Items to purchase (or already on hand): grey pants, red long-sleeved shirt

Items to make: shirt, belt, crown, Bait. The shirt, like Callum’s is detailed with acrylic paint. The belt is made entirely of felt, with velcro for attaching it. The crown is papier-mâché, and to keep it together in the front, there is shelf liner. Bait is entirely fleece and felt (I like felt with smaller details because the fabric is easier to work with). If you’d rather not make Bait, Etsy has a pretty cute one.

Zym the Dragon

Items to purchase (or already on hand): blue pants, blue hooded sweatshirt, Dollar Tree fairy wings

Items to make: tail, mask, wings, hair. Tail is made from felt and stuffed with plastic bags. Mask is made from felt and cardboard. Pipe cleaners are used for the horns, to keep them stiff. Felt is sewn to the hood of the sweatshirt for the hair. Wings are felt which is laid over top of existing fairy wings.
