Harry Potter Railing: From Boring to Exciting

Harry Potter Railing

I am in the process of completing a giant stairwell makeover that will probably take about 50 years, at the rate I am progressing. That’s okay though. I am enjoying the journey. One of the key elements of this makeover is the Harry Potter Railing. Since we have recently had our kitchen/hallway/entryway remodeled, including a new banister, I have taken advantage of the opportunity to paint a blank canvas.

Harry Potter Railing Wands

Choosing the wands was difficult because I was confined to a particular shape. I would have loved to paint the Elder Wand, for example, but it just wasn’t practical. I didn’t want to have to mold or shape anything because I am a fan of simplicity where I can get it, and I am also a fan of durability. So these are the wands that made the cut:

From left to right: Draco Malfoy, George Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, Newt Scamander.

The bases of the wands are painted for the four houses. Each side has a different house on it, so each house is represented 9 times. The wands/bases and Snitch are painted with acrylic paint and sealed with a Polyurethane coating. The rest of the banister has more heavy duty paint since those areas will be touched constantly.

The Golden Snitch!

Since there happens to be a perfect sphere on my banister, I put a Golden Snitch in the place of honour. I really wanted to put wings on it, but, again, durability. I knew kids would be hanging off of it and spinning on it and hanging things on it. So the wings remain tucked away inside of the Snitch.

This pic has a sneak peek of the mural that will be in the stairwell. I plan to paint many of our favourite characters on both walls going up.
